Plus-size models: Best cars for larger drivers

2010-Honda-Accord

In a previous blog post, we discussed the U.S. obesity problem and the effect it has on gasoline consumption. Not only does extra weight in the car reduce fuel economy, larger people also tend to buy bigger vehicles that may compromise fuel efficiency. However, you don’t need to buy a gas-guzzling truck to get the best fit in a vehicle.

Recognizing the growing need, we have identified several good cars that are best for larger drivers. We found them to have easy access, a roomy driving position, decent visibility, and comfortable seats plus, a tilt-and-telescope steering wheel for extra room. (You have to upgrade to the premium-priced XT Limited model to get this feature in the Forester.) Also note that a new 2011 Honda Odyssey will hit dealerships in the fall.

Make/model Price CR overall mpg
Honda Accord $22,795 23
Honda Odyssey $32,610 19
Hyundai Azera $31,670 20
Kia Rondo $20,655 21
Subaru Forester XT Limited $28,860 20

The vehicles listed above are all Consumer Reports recommended models, which mean they meet Consumer Reports' stringent testing, reliability, and safety standards. As always, it’s important to test drive any vehicle you are considering before you buy to make sure it’s a good fit.
